HISTORY

It was the late Deannie MacFadzen’s dream to have a Boston Terrier Club of Canada. A group of Boston enthusiasts in the Brandon and Winnipeg, Manitoba area got together and founded the Club on May 18th 1978 and soon developed a monthly newsletter, The Boston Snorter. Their first Boston booster was held with the Crocus Obedience and Kennel Club Inc. on September 22, 1979 with the late Mr. George Donaldson judging. When forming the Club, it was Deannie’s intention to hold a booster once a year in a different province each year. She felt this would give every member in every province at least a one time chance to attend a Booster, Dinner and Meeting. At this time membership to the Club was only $7.00. Deannie was the first President of the Club and she held that position from 1979 to 1986.

The Boston Terrier Club of Canada was officially recognized by The Canadian Kennel Club on January 18, 1984.

The first National Specialty was held on October 26, 1991 at Abbotsford, British Columbia, under the guidance of Mrs. Donna M. Cole, Club President at that time. There were 55 Boston Terrier entered and were judged by Mr. Bob Candland. The Club has progressed on to holding one National Specialty and one Regional Specialty per year, rotating to different areas of the country, plus several boosters in different areas.

A request went out to the Boston Terrier Club members in 1984 to design a Club Logo. In the November 1984 issue of the Boston Snorter, seven designs were published and members were asked to vote on their favorite design. The winning design was first published on the cover of the February 1985 issue and the artist was Loretta Martin of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The objectives of the Club are to:

  • Educate members and the public at large in the benefits of purebred Boston Terriers and responsible breeding practices.
  • Encourage participation by conducting licensed specialty shows, sanction matches, obedience trials, exhibitions and boosters under the rules of the Canadian Kennel Club.

At present the Club has 54 memberships, which include 14 Family, 22 Active, 12 Associate, 1 Honorary, 4 Life Memberships and 1 Complementary . Members range all across Canada, some in the United States, and a few in the European countries.
